Almost to Eden is the captivating fictional narrative of an Irish immigrant, Maggie O'Brien, whose life intertwines with members and workers of the historic Jekyll Island Club. Seeking a new Eden in America, she discovers that freedom and justice, even in the new world, do not always triumph over wealth and power. In the process of her journey, Maggie finds and loses the things she loves most, but courage and grace lead her toward a fulfillment she never thought to find.

I realize many reviewers enjoyed this book much more than I did, but I personally found it dull, although I have enjoyed other things by June Hall McCash. As I was reading it, I kept thinking that surely it must be based on a real person/actual life, as that could have been one explanation for some of the tedium of the plot -- a thing we tend to excuse when we realize we're reading a real life story (as in Eugenia Price, mentioned in some of the other reviews here).
I knew as I went along that some members of the Jekyll Island Club who make cameos here were real people, but had come to assume that Maggie, the main character, must also be inspired by reality. When I got to the end of the book, I was surprised to find that it wasn't Maggie, but another important character, who was the "real" person, and for spoilers' sake I won't give away who that is.
It is intriguing to think of an author stumbling on a forgotten old gravestone and choosing to build a fiction around the name listed there. But the book itself has a pretty slow pace and otherwise is not really all that memorable.
Fair warning: If you've come to this book wanting to read about Jekyll Island, know that only a small portion of the story takes place there. The majority of the book is not set on Jekyll.

Almost to Eden edition by June Hall McCash Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
June Hall McCash's books are excellent and wonderfully researched. For those of us who love the Georgia coast, her books are real treasures.
I enjoyed it! It brought to life a vision of how it must have been during the time of the Jekyll Island Club's operation. Having visited Jekyll Island several times and being intrigued by the "cottages" and other buildings used by the club members, it was a fun read.
Very good read, but I wish the characters had been better developed. It was a fast read, definitely a page turner, but didn't love it the way I loved McCash's "Plum Orchard."
A very good book and quick read that I bought in prep for my trip to coastal Georgia. A good possible story of an immigrant that found an opportunity to work at/for the Jekyll Island Club circa early 1900s. It provided a good light history that kept us excited for our stay at the J.I. Club Hotel, which was a wonderful short experience.
Well done historical romantic novel. If you know anything about southern coastal Georgia....you will truly enjoy. Since Eugenia price passed away I've longed for more of this type of historical romance and do hope that Ms McCain will continue her writing. Thank you so much!!!!
This is a beautifully written account, much historically accurate, of a young Irish immigrant, Maggie. Maggie endures many heart breaking and yet some heart lifting instances throughout her life to keep you interested from page one to the final page. The scenes are described so well that you easily feel transplanted to those times and places. Maggie is such an inspirational soul; don't miss an opportunity to know her.
I moved to Brunswick Georgia in the early 60's before Jekyll Island began its' renovation on the old hotel and some of the "Millionaires' Cottages" as they were then called. I remember the hotels mentioned and some of the children whose parents worked on the island during its' heyday. I never noticed the graves mentioned but I am going to look them up the next time I go over to the island. I thoroughly enjoyed this book ( a bit of a tear jerker!) and its look into Irish immigrants (my grandmother was one) and their trials and tribulations of citizenship. This is also a glimpse into the societal strata which existed in this time frame.
The descriptions of Brunswick and Jekyll island were spot on. Next on my list to read is PLUM ORCHARD by the same author. I love Cumberland Island and had the good fortune to know a late resident who was raised on the island from the early 1900's. . Some of the names mentioned in the outline I recognized as old Cumberland families. Can't wait. Maybe my path will cross with Ms McCash sometime in the future and I will have an opportunity to tell her how much I enjoyed this first book. I hope so.
